About African Safari bingo

A safari card based on the wildlife of the East African savanna: the famous big animals such as Lion, Cape buffalo, African elephant, Leopard and Black rhino, plus the grazers, birds and small hunters that guides point out, like the Dik-dik, Secretary bird, Serval and Honey badger. Safari squares such as Watering hole and Great Migration complete the trip.

This African Safari list is 42 entries long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 18 off each card. That is why one entry (Giraffe, say) appears on about 17 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no African elephant or Leopard.

A host reads out one entry at a time from the printed caller sheet (all 42 of them, shuffled); players daub the square if their card has it and call bingo on a full line.

How to host African Safari bingo

  1. Print the African Safari cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Termite mound, Olive baboon, Vervet monkey, Dik-dik and Black rhino.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 42 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Thomson's gazelle, Sunrise game drive, Serval, Binoculars and African wild dog; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Explain the 'Big Five' before you start (Lion, Leopard, African elephant, Cape buffalo, Black rhino) and give a small cheer whenever one is called.

  4. Use it on a real safari or a zoo visit: Binoculars, Park ranger and Safari vehicle squares let travelers mark the trip itself, not only the animals.

  5. Ask older players to sort calls into hunters and grazers, so Cheetah and Jackal go one way and Impala, Topi and Wildebeest go the other.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 12 (Grey crowned crane in this set's order) and a blackout near call 38; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

African Safari bingo variations

  • African Safari variation

Big Five round: a normal line does not win; a player must also mark at least three of Lion, Leopard, African elephant, Cape buffalo and Black rhino somewhere on the card.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Termite mound to Lion; on average one card fills after 41.3 of the 42 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Picture bingo for pre-readers

Use 3x3 cards with the 9 entries that have a symbol, such as Lion, African elephant and Giraffe.

First 15 calls of this African Safari set

Seed "african-safari" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 19 of the first 30 completes the diagonal from the top left (African wild dog, Ostrich, Serval and Savanna) on call 9, and card 10 is the first full card on call 39.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the African Safari bingo list?

42, from Aardvark to Wildebeest. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 18. The shortest entry is Lion (4 characters) and the longest is Sunrise game drive (18).

Are all African Safari bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 14 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 2.19 × 10³⁵ different arrangements are possible from the 42 entries (353,697,121,050 different selections of 24).

How many African Safari bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 12 calls with 30 cards in play, 11 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 15 with just 10. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does African Safari bingo take?

An African Safari game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 calls (9-16 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 38; with 10 players the first line needs about 15.

Can I print African Safari bingo cards for free?

Yes, up to 30 unique cards per set at no cost and without an account. Pick how many you need, then use Print cards or Download PDF: each card gets its own page with the title “African Safari Bingo” on top, and the caller sheet lists all 42 entries in this set's shuffled order.

How do I make my own African Safari bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 42 entries are already in the generator, so delete Safari vehicle or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.

Is there a picture version of African Safari bingo?

9 of the 42 entries have a picture symbol (🦁 Lion, 🐘 African elephant, 🦒 Giraffe, 🦓 Plains zebra). Print 3x3 cards with symbol entries such as Hippopotamus and Black rhino for children who cannot read yet; symbols show on screen and in browser printing.
