About Debate Night bingo

Debate Night Bingo is a nonpartisan card for watching any political debate, local or national. It tracks the format (“Opening statement”, “Rebuttal”, “Muted microphone”), the familiar phrases (“Let me be clear”, “With all due respect”) and the policy topics that come up, such as “Economy”, “Housing costs” and “Infrastructure”, without favoring any candidate or party.

This Debate Night list is 41 moments long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 17 off each card. That is why one entry (“Moderator interrupts”, say) appears on about 18 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no “Closing statement” or “Time limit ignored”.

There is no caller: everyone marks a square the moment it happens or is said, such as “Mentions family” or “Jobs”. The first complete line wins; the caller sheet is the host's checklist.

How many moments until Debate Night bingo has a winner

Nobody controls the order here, so this table assumes the 41 moments come up in random order: 150 shuffled orders on the first 60 cards of this set. With 30 players the first line comes after a median 12 moments; a blackout needs 37 of the 41, so most games end on a line.

How to play Debate Night bingo

  1. Print the Debate Night cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with “Health care”, “Moderator interrupts”, “Taxes”, “Muted microphone” and “With all due respect”.

  2. Watch and mark, no caller needed

Players mark a square the moment it happens or is said, “Mentions family” for example. Keep the shuffled caller sheet (opening with “Veterans”, “Mentions family” and “With all due respect”) as your checklist, or read from it to run a called game instead.

  3. In a civics class, ask students to note which candidate gave each marked square, then discuss which questions were answered directly and which were dodged.

  4. Keep the room friendly by agreeing that everyone marks squares for all candidates; a “Dodged question” counts no matter who dodged it.

  5. Assign one person to watch the moderator only, since “Time limit ignored” and “Moderator interrupts” are easy to miss when you are listening to answers.

  6. Check the winning line

If the moments come in random order, 30 players see a first line after about 12 of them; ask the winner when each square on the line happened and compare with your checklist.

Debate Night bingo variations

  • Debate Night variation

Topic tracker: players mark only the policy squares, such as “Taxes” or “Education”, and write one line under each about what was actually proposed, so the card becomes a debate summary.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 moments, “Health care” to “Immigration”; if they come in random order, one card fills after 40.3 of the 41 on average, so save it for a long event.

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 41 moments and no free space; one card is full after about 39.5 moments instead of 40.3.

First 15 entries on the Debate Night caller sheet

Seed "debate-night" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints (use it as a checklist, or call from it). With these entries in this order, card 9 of the first 30 completes the N column (“Mentions family”, “Flag pin”, “Infrastructure” and “Jobs”) on entry 16, and card 14 is the first full card on entry 39.

Frequently asked questions

How many moments are on the Debate Night bingo list?

41, from Audience applause to With all due respect. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 17. The shortest entry is Jobs (4 characters) and the longest is Question from a voter (21).

Are all Debate Night bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 14 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 9.41 × 10³⁴ different arrangements are possible from the 41 moments (151,584,480,450 different selections of 24).

How many Debate Night bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 12 moments; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 11, and 10 single cards took 15. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How do you play Debate Night bingo?

There is no caller: everyone marks a square the moment it happens or is said, such as “Mentions family” or “Jobs”. The first complete line wins; the caller sheet is the host's checklist.

How long does Debate Night bingo take?

A Debate Night game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 moments (9-15 in 80% of simulated games). A blackout takes about 37; with 10 players the first line needs about 15.

Can I print Debate Night bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 41 moments; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own Debate Night bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 41 moments are already in the generator, so delete “Repeats a slogan” or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
