About Element Symbols bingo

A memorization game for chemical symbols: the cards show only symbols, from H, He and Li through Na, Cl and Ca, including the tricky ones that come from Latin or German names, such as Fe for iron, Au for gold, Pb for lead, Hg for mercury and W for tungsten. Call the element name and players hunt for its symbol.

This Element Symbols list is 42 answers long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 18 off each card. That is why one entry (Li, say) appears on about 17 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no H or Be.

The caller sheet lists the 42 answers in shuffled order, but they are not read out as written: the caller reads out the element name (say “sodium” and players look for Na). The first complete line wins.

How to host Element Symbols bingo

  1. Print the Element Symbols cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Hg, Cu, Pt, Al and Xe.

  2. Call the clue, not the square

The caller sheet lists all 42 answers in shuffled order, opening with Co, Mn, Na, N and F. For each one, read out the element name (say “sodium” and players look for Na), then tick it.

  3. Always call the element name, not the symbol; hearing ‘sodium’ and finding “Na” is the skill students need on a chemistry test.

  4. Group the Latin-based symbols in one round, “Fe”, “Cu”, “Ag”, “Au”, “Pb”, “Sn” and “Sb”, and tell the origin story of each as it is found.

  5. Watch for mix-ups between “Co” and a carbon-oxygen pair; ask players to say ‘cobalt’ aloud when they mark it so the capital-lowercase rule sticks.

  6. Check the answers on the winning line

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 12 (O in this set's order). Ask the winner to say the clue for each square, which doubles as a quick review.

Element Symbols bingo variations

  • Element Symbols variation

Reverse calls: in round two, the caller reads the symbol letter by letter and players shout the element name before marking. Correct shouts earn a free center square for the next game.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 answers, Hg to Ca; on average one card fills after 41.3 of the 42 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 42 answers and no free space; one card is full after about 40.5 calls instead of 41.3.

First 15 calls of this Element Symbols set

Seed "element-symbols" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 29 of the first 30 completes row 3 (Mg, Ne, Na and Rn) on call 13, and card 2 is the first full card on call 40.

Frequently asked questions

How many answers are on the Element Symbols bingo list?

42, from Ag to Zn. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 18. Every entry is 1 to 2 characters long.

Are all Element Symbols bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 11 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 2.19 × 10³⁵ different arrangements are possible from the 42 answers (353,697,121,050 different selections of 24).

How many Element Symbols bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 12 calls with 30 cards in play, 11 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 16 with just 10. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How do you play Element Symbols bingo?

The caller sheet lists the 42 answers in shuffled order, but they are not read out as written: the caller reads out the element name (say “sodium” and players look for Na). The first complete line wins.

How long does Element Symbols bingo take?

An Element Symbols game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 calls (8-15 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 38; with 10 players the first line needs about 16.

Can I print Element Symbols bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 42 answers; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own Element Symbols bingo cards?

Open Edit words in the generator above: it already holds the 42 answers, one per line. Replace Hg with something from your own group, add inside jokes or names, and the sample card redraws at once. 5x5 cards need 24 entries or more.
