About ESL Opposites bingo

ESL Opposites Bingo is made of word pairs like “Heavy” and “Light”, “Thick” and “Thin”, “Near” and “Far” or “Same” and “Different”, so every call teaches two words. It includes words with more than one opposite, such as “Short”, which pairs with both “Tall” and “Long”. It suits young learners and beginners practicing describing words.

On a 5x5 card with a free center, ESL Opposites bingo shows 24 of the 56 entries, so each one lands on about 43% of the cards: in a set of 30, Big or Small appears on roughly 13 cards. Card 1 leaves out 32 of them, including Big, Small and Cold, so no single card can mark everything.

Play it like classic bingo: one person reads the 56 entries in the shuffled order of the caller sheet, everyone marks matching squares, and a full row, column or diagonal wins.

How to host ESL Opposites bingo

  1. Print the ESL Opposites cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Fast, Far, Easy, Slow and Short.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 56 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Different, Hot, Short, First and Small; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Call the opposite of the word you want marked: say “Empty” and players mark “Full”, which doubles the vocabulary practiced in every round.

  4. When “Light” comes up, ask whether it means the opposite of “Heavy” or of dark, and accept either answer with an example sentence.

  5. Use real props for quick pairs like “Wet” and “Dry” or “Open” and “Closed”, holding up a sponge or opening a book as you call.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 15 (Weak in this set's order) and a blackout near call 50; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 56 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 53.6 calls instead of 54.7.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the ESL Opposites bingo list?

56, from Back to Young. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 32. The shortest entry is In (2 characters) and the longest is Difficult (9).

Are all ESL Opposites bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 9 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 2.70 × 10³⁹ different arrangements are possible from the 56 entries (about 4.36 × 10¹⁵ different selections of 24).

How many ESL Opposites bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 15 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 14, and 10 single cards took 20. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does ESL Opposites bingo take?

An ESL Opposites game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 15 calls (11-20 in 80% of simulated games), about 3 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 50; with 10 players the first line needs about 20.

Can I print ESL Opposites bingo cards for free?

Yes, up to 30 unique cards per set at no cost and without an account. Pick how many you need, then use Print cards or Download PDF: each card gets its own page with the title “ESL Opposites Bingo” on top, and the caller sheet lists all 56 entries in this set's shuffled order.

How do I make my own ESL Opposites bingo cards?

Open Edit words in the generator above: it already holds the 56 entries, one per line. Replace Happy with something from your own group, add inside jokes or names, and the sample card redraws at once. 5x5 cards need 24 entries or more.
