About Phrasal Verbs bingo

Phrasal Verbs Bingo collects everyday verb-plus-particle combinations whose meaning cannot be guessed from the parts: “Take after”, “Put off”, “Come across”, “Run into” and “Get over”, alongside easier ones like “Wake up” and “Try on”. It suits intermediate ESL classes and adult conversation groups, where these verbs appear constantly in everyday speech.

This Phrasal Verbs list is 49 entries long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 25 off each card. That is why one entry (Look for, say) appears on about 15 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no Look after or Look up.

A host reads out one entry at a time from the printed caller sheet (all 49 of them, shuffled); players daub the square if their card has it and call bingo on a full line.

How to host Phrasal Verbs bingo

  1. Print the Phrasal Verbs cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Put off, Look forward to, Run into, Throw away and Give back.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 49 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Hang out, Point out, Fill out, Call back and Make up; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Instead of the phrasal verb, call a one-word synonym such as postpone or recover, and players mark “Put off” or “Get over”, then confirm the meaning together.

  4. Group calls by verb, all the look phrases (“Look after”, “Look for”, “Look up”) in one stretch, so learners notice how the particle changes the meaning.

  5. Ask winners to make a sentence about their own week with two squares from the line, for example “Show up” and “Calm down”.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 13 (Wake up in this set's order) and a blackout near call 44; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Phrasal Verbs bingo variations

  • Phrasal Verbs variation

Story chain: each time a square is called, the next player adds a sentence to a shared class story using that phrasal verb, such as “Break down” about a bus. Anyone can challenge a wrong meaning.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Put off to Get along; on average one card fills after 48.0 of the 49 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 49 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 47.1 calls instead of 48.0.

First 15 calls of this Phrasal Verbs set

Seed "phrasal-verbs" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 8 of the first 30 completes the G column (Call back, Drop off, Fill out, Look up and Make up) on call 10, and card 26 is the first full card on call 44.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Phrasal Verbs bingo list?

49, from Break down to Write down. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 25. The shortest entry is Get up (6 characters) and the longest is Look forward to (15).

Are all Phrasal Verbs bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 10 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 3.92 × 10³⁷ different arrangements are possible from the 49 entries (63,205,303,218,876 different selections of 24).

How many Phrasal Verbs bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 13 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 12, and 10 single cards took 18. Two cards each suit a small group that wants a quicker game. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does Phrasal Verbs bingo take?

A Phrasal Verbs game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 13 calls (10-17 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 44; with 10 players the first line needs about 18.

Can I print Phrasal Verbs bingo cards for free?

Yes, up to 30 unique cards per set at no cost and without an account. Pick how many you need, then use Print cards or Download PDF: each card gets its own page with the title “Phrasal Verbs Bingo” on top, and the caller sheet lists all 49 entries in this set's shuffled order.

How do I make my own Phrasal Verbs bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 49 entries are already in the generator, so delete Work out or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
