About US State Capitals bingo

US State Capitals Bingo lists the capital city of all 50 states, including the ones that trip people up, such as “Tallahassee”, “Harrisburg”, “Pierre” and “Montpelier”. The caller reads the state and players hunt for its capital, which turns a memorization chore into a quick review game for middle-school geography or a family quiz night.

50 answers make up this US State Capitals set. With 24 per card, any single one, Cheyenne for example, appears on about 48% of the cards, so in a room of 30 players around 14 of them have it.

The caller sheet lists the 50 answers in shuffled order, but they are not read out as written: the caller reads out the state (say “Kentucky” and players look for Frankfort). The first complete line wins.

How to host US State Capitals bingo

  1. Print the US State Capitals cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Madison, Concord, Montpelier, Santa Fe and Augusta.

  2. Call the clue, not the square

The caller sheet lists all 50 answers in shuffled order, opening with Columbus, Honolulu, Columbia, Harrisburg and Sacramento. For each one, read out the state (say “Kentucky” and players look for Frankfort), then tick it.

  3. Call the state, not the city: say Kentucky and let players find “Frankfort” themselves. Write each answer on the board afterward so nobody marks the wrong square twice.

  4. Group the capitals people confuse with bigger cities, like “Albany”, “Springfield” and “Sacramento”, into one round, then talk about why the largest city is not always the capital.

  5. Use a 4x4 card for a ten-minute warm-up; with 16 of 50 capitals on each card, players still meet tricky names like “Bismarck” and “Olympia”.

  6. Check the answers on the winning line

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 14 (Madison in this set's order). Ask the winner to say the clue for each square, which doubles as a quick review.

US State Capitals bingo variations

  • US State Capitals variation

Reverse the game: the caller reads the capital, such as “Cheyenne” or “Juneau”, and players must say the state aloud before marking. A wrong state means the square stays open until it is called again.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 answers, Madison to Jefferson City; on average one card fills after 49.0 of the 50 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 50 answers and no free space; one card is full after about 48.0 calls instead of 49.0.

First 15 calls of this US State Capitals set

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 14 calls with 30 cards in play, 13 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 18 with just 10. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.
