About Labor Day bingo

A Labor Day card for the first Monday in September that honors working people and the history of the holiday: the first parade in New York in 1882, the federal holiday signed by Grover Cleveland in 1894, the eight-hour day, child labor laws and the weekend off. The rest of the card covers the jobs that keep a town running and the last cookout of summer.

This Labor Day list is 41 entries long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 17 off each card. That is why one entry (Labor Day parade, say) appears on about 18 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no First Monday in Sept or Grover Cleveland.

The caller reads the 41 entries from a shuffled caller sheet and players mark them; the first complete line (row, column or diagonal) wins.

How to host Labor Day bingo

  1. Print the Labor Day cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Paycheck, Hard hat, Mail carrier, Federal since 1894 and Chef.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 41 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Labor Day parade, Firefighter, Union banner, Plumber and Lunch pail; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. In class, ask students to act out a job square like 'Electrician', 'Mail carrier' or 'Firefighter' for the others to guess before it is marked.

  4. Connect history to daily life: when 'Weekend off' or 'Eight-hour day' is called, ask students what a week might look like without them.

  5. At a family cookout, use the end-of-summer squares, such as 'Last pool day' and 'Picnic table', and leave the history squares for a classroom version.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 12 (End of summer in this set's order) and a blackout near call 37; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Labor Day bingo variations

  • Labor Day variation

Job shadow bingo: each player is given a job card, such as 'Chef' or 'Plumber', and may only mark a square after naming one tool or task that worker uses.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Paycheck to Thank a worker; on average one card fills after 40.3 of the 41 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 41 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 39.5 calls instead of 40.3.

First 15 calls of this Labor Day set

Seed "labor-day" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 13 of the first 30 completes row 5 (Lunch pail, Workers' rights, First Monday in Sept, Carpenter and Nurse) on call 11, and card 30 is the first full card on call 38.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Labor Day bingo list?

41, from Beach trip to Workers' rights. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 17. The shortest entry is Chef (4 characters) and the longest is First Monday in Sept (20).

Are all Labor Day bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 15 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 9.41 × 10³⁴ different arrangements are possible from the 41 entries (151,584,480,450 different selections of 24).

How many Labor Day bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 12 calls with 30 cards in play, 10 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 15 with just 10. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does Labor Day bingo take?

A Labor Day game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 calls (8-15 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 37; with 10 players the first line needs about 15.

Can I print Labor Day bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 41 entries; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own Labor Day bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 41 entries are already in the generator, so delete Plumber or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
