About Christmas Eve bingo

A card for the night before Christmas, covering both sides of the evening: what children do (Cookies for Santa, Listening for bells, Kids can't sleep) and what adults do after bedtime (Assembling toys, Hiding the gifts, Last-minute wrapping). It also names Christmas Eve traditions from other cultures, such as Noche Buena, the Polish Wigilia supper and the Italian-American dinner of Seven fishes.

This Christmas Eve list is 45 entries long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 21 off each card. That is why one entry (New pajamas, say) appears on about 16 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no Candlelight service or Carrots for reindeer.

A host reads out one entry at a time from the printed caller sheet (all 45 of them, shuffled); players daub the square if their card has it and call bingo on a full line.

How to host Christmas Eve bingo

  1. Print the Christmas Eve cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with New pajamas, Note to Santa, Listening for bells, Lullaby and Tamales.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 45 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Wrapping station, Midnight Mass, Hiding the gifts, Noche Buena and Last-minute wrapping; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Play it after the Christmas Eve dinner as a calm game before bed; finish with the quiet squares like Lullaby and Bedtime story.

  4. Give adults their own card to mark through the late evening: Assembling toys, Batteries ready and Sooty footprints usually happen after the kids are asleep.

  5. If your family keeps a different tradition, such as Tamales or Seven fishes, mention it when called and ask guests what their own Christmas Eve meal is.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 13 (Assembling toys in this set's order) and a blackout near call 41; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.
