About Commute bingo

Commute Bingo is for the trip to work, whether by car, bus, train, bike or on foot: “Traffic jam”, “Platform change”, “Running for the bus”, “Construction detour”, “Bike helmet hair” and the rare “All green lights”. Play it alone over a week or with colleagues comparing routes, and it makes the daily commute feel a little more like a game.

This Commute list is 43 moments long and a 5x5 card with a free center takes 24, which leaves 19 off each card. That is why one entry (“Train delay”, say) appears on about 17 of 30 cards: card 1, for instance, has no “Missed connection” or “Bike lane”.

There is no caller: everyone marks a square the moment it happens or is said, such as “Same faces daily” or “Ferry ride”. The first complete line wins; the caller sheet is the host's checklist.

How many moments until Commute bingo has a winner

Nobody controls the order here, so this table assumes the 43 moments come up in random order: 150 shuffled orders on the first 60 cards of this set. With 30 players the first line comes after a median 13 moments; a blackout needs 39 of the 43, so most games end on a line.

How to play Commute bingo

  1. Print the Commute cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with “Parking lot full”, “All green lights”, “Construction detour”, “Fogged windshield” and “Every red light”.

  2. Watch and mark, no caller needed

Players mark a square the moment it happens or is said, “Same faces daily” for example. Keep the shuffled caller sheet (opening with “Empty seat”, “Ferry ride” and “Gas station stop”) as your checklist, or read from it to run a called game instead.

  3. Never mark squares while driving; passengers and transit riders can play live, while drivers mark “Every red light” or “Toll booth” after they park.

  4. Colleagues on different routes can play the same card for a week and compare on Friday, when “Ferry ride” and “Park and ride” may separate winners.

  5. Keep a card in a wallet or bag for a whole month on a 5x5 grid, so rare squares like “Flat tire” are not needed to win.

  6. Check the winning line

If the moments come in random order, 30 players see a first line after about 13 of them; ask the winner when each square on the line happened and compare with your checklist.

Commute bingo variations

  • Commute variation

Route swap: two colleagues trade commute methods for one day, such as bus for bike, and each tries to mark a full row from squares like “Bike lane” or “Commuter rail” they rarely see.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 moments, “Parking lot full” to “Electric scooter”; if they come in random order, one card fills after 42.2 of the 43 on average, so save it for a long event.

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 43 moments and no free space; one card is full after about 41.4 moments instead of 42.2.

First 15 entries on the Commute caller sheet

Seed "commute-bingo" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints (use it as a checklist, or call from it). With these entries in this order, card 2 of the first 30 completes the diagonal from the top left (“Ferry ride”, “Empty seat”, “Icy road” and “Gas station stop”) on entry 5, and card 22 is the first full card on entry 39.

Frequently asked questions

How many moments are on the Commute bingo list?

43, from All green lights to Wrong exit. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 19. The shortest entry is Carpool (7 characters) and the longest is Walk from the station (21).

Are all Commute bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 13 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 4.97 × 10³⁵ different arrangements are possible from the 43 moments (800,472,431,850 different selections of 24).

How many Commute bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 13 moments with 30 cards in play, 11 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 15 with just 10. Two cards each suit a small group that wants a quicker game. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How do you play Commute bingo?

There is no caller: everyone marks a square the moment it happens or is said, such as “Same faces daily” or “Ferry ride”. The first complete line wins; the caller sheet is the host's checklist.

How long does Commute bingo take?

A Commute game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 13 moments (9-15 in 80% of simulated games). A blackout takes about 39; with 10 players the first line needs about 15.

Can I print Commute bingo cards for free?

Yes, up to 30 unique cards per set at no cost and without an account. Pick how many you need, then use Print cards or Download PDF: each card gets its own page with the title “Commute Bingo” on top, and the caller sheet lists all 43 moments in this set's shuffled order.

How do I make my own Commute bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 43 moments are already in the generator, so delete “Electric scooter” or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
