About ESL Colors bingo

ESL Colors Bingo mixes basic color words like “Red” and “Blue” with shades that learners meet a little later, such as “Navy blue”, “Turquoise” and “Maroon”. It also includes color-and-noun phrases like “Yellow banana” and “Gray elephant”, so beginners practice putting the adjective before the noun. It works for young learners and adult beginner classes alike.

On a 5x5 card with a free center, ESL Colors bingo shows 24 of the 40 entries, so each one lands on about 60% of the cards: in a set of 30, Red or Orange appears on roughly 18 cards. Card 1 leaves out 16 of them, including Orange, Blue and Purple, so no single card can mark everything.

A host reads out one entry at a time from the printed caller sheet (all 40 of them, shuffled); players daub the square if their card has it and call bingo on a full line.

How to host ESL Colors bingo

  1. Print the ESL Colors cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Silver, White, Green frog, Purple grapes and Black cat.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 40 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with White snow, Yellow, Peach, Navy blue and Green; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Hold up a crayon or a sheet of colored paper as you call “Lime green” or “Light blue”, so pre-readers can match the shade before they try to read the word.

  4. Ask players to say a full sentence when they mark a phrase square, for example “I see a pink pig” for “Pink pig”, to practice adjective order out loud.

  5. Call “Dark green” and “Light green” one after the other so learners notice that only the first word changes, then do the same with the blues.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 12 (Purple in this set's order) and a blackout near call 37; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

ESL Colors bingo variations

  • ESL Colors variation

Play I-spy bingo: instead of reading the word, the caller describes something in the room by its color, such as “something maroon on the wall”, and players mark that color if it is on their card.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Silver to Beige; on average one card fills after 39.4 of the 40 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Picture bingo for pre-readers

Use 3x3 cards with the 20 entries that have a symbol, such as Red, Orange and Yellow.

First 15 calls of this ESL Colors set

Seed "esl-colors" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 26 of the first 30 completes row 5 (Yellow, Peach, Green, Lime green and Brown bear) on call 16, and card 5 is the first full card on call 36.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the ESL Colors bingo list?

40, from Beige to Yellow banana. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 16. The shortest entry is Red (3 characters) and the longest is Red strawberry (14).

Are all ESL Colors bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 14 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 3.90 × 10³⁴ different arrangements are possible from the 40 entries (62,852,101,650 different selections of 24).

How many ESL Colors bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 12 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 11, and 10 single cards took 15. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does ESL Colors bingo take?

An ESL Colors game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 calls (9-15 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 37; with 10 players the first line needs about 15.

Can I print ESL Colors bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 40 entries; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own ESL Colors bingo cards?

Open Edit words in the generator above: it already holds the 40 entries, one per line. Replace Turquoise with something from your own group, add inside jokes or names, and the sample card redraws at once. 5x5 cards need 24 entries or more.

Is there a picture version of ESL Colors bingo?

20 of the 40 entries have a picture symbol (🔴 Red, 🟠 Orange, 🟡 Yellow, 🟢 Green). Print 3x3 cards with symbol entries such as Blue and Purple for children who cannot read yet; symbols show on screen and in browser printing.
