About German Colors bingo

German Colors Bingo mixes color words like “grün”, “türkis” and “silbern” with compounds such as “hellblau” and “dunkelgrün”, then adds noun phrases with all three genders, from “der braune Bär” and “die graue Maus” to “das blaue Meer”. Adjectives are lowercase and nouns capitalized, as in German. It suits beginners learning colors and adjective endings at the same time.

39 entries make up this German Colors set. With 24 per card, any single one, die rote Rose for example, appears on about 62% of the cards, so in a room of 30 players around 18 of them have it.

Play it like classic bingo: one person reads the 39 entries in the shuffled order of the caller sheet, everyone marks matching squares, and a full row, column or diagonal wins.

How to host German Colors bingo

  1. Print the German Colors cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with türkis, schwarz, violett, golden and die weiße Wolke.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 39 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with bunt, die rote Erdbeere, der blaue Himmel, schwarz and der grüne Frosch; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. When “der rosa Flamingo” comes up, point out that “rosa” and “lila” usually keep the same form before a noun, unlike “blau” in “der blaue Himmel”.

  4. Build compounds on the board as you call “hell” and “dunkel” squares, and ask the class to invent new ones, such as “hellrot” or “dunkelgelb”.

  5. Group the phrases by article as they are called, der, die and das, so learners see that the -e ending stays the same after the definite article.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 12 (violett in this set's order) and a blackout near call 36; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

German Colors bingo variations

  • German Colors variation

Opposite-shade bingo: the caller says a light shade, like “hellgrün”, and players mark the dark version, “dunkelgrün”, if they have it, or any phrase with the base color, such as “das grüne Gras”.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, türkis to orange; on average one card fills after 38.4 of the 39 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Picture bingo for pre-readers

Use 3x3 cards with the 13 entries that have a symbol, such as das grüne Gras, die gelbe Sonne and der weiße Schnee.

First 15 calls of this German Colors set

Seed "german-colors" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 25 of the first 30 completes row 3 (das blaue Meer, der weiße Schnee, lila and der blaue Himmel) on call 11, and card 17 is the first full card on call 36.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the German Colors bingo list?

39, from beige to weiß. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 15. The shortest entry is rot (3 characters) and the longest is die schwarze Katze (18).

Are all German Colors bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 15 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 1.56 × 10³⁴ different arrangements are possible from the 39 entries (25,140,840,660 different selections of 24).

How many German Colors bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 12 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 11, and 10 single cards took 14. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does German Colors bingo take?

A German Colors game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 calls (9-15 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 36; with 10 players the first line needs about 14.

Can I print German Colors bingo cards for free?

Yes. All 39 entries are loaded above, so choose a card count up to 30 and press Print cards, or Download PDF to print later at one card per sheet (30 sheets for a full set). The shuffled caller sheet prints separately; nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.

How do I make my own German Colors bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 39 entries are already in the generator, so delete dunkelrot or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.

Is there a picture version of German Colors bingo?

13 of the 39 entries have a picture symbol (🌿 das grüne Gras, ☀️ die gelbe Sonne, ❄️ der weiße Schnee, 🐈‍⬛ die schwarze Katze). Print 3x3 cards with symbol entries such as der braune Bär and die graue Maus for children who cannot read yet; symbols show on screen and in browser printing.
