About French Colors bingo

French Colors Bingo combines color words such as “rouge”, “bordeaux” and “argenté” and shades like “bleu marine” and “vert foncé” with short phrases that show agreement, from “la neige blanche” and “la souris grise” to “la prune violette”. It suits beginners who know the basic colors and are ready to see why “vert” becomes “verte” after a feminine noun.

On a 5x5 card with a free center, French Colors bingo shows 24 of the 40 entries, so each one lands on about 60% of the cards: in a set of 30, rouge or bleu appears on roughly 18 cards. Card 1 leaves out 16 of them, including jaune, orange and brun, so no single card can mark everything.

The caller reads the 40 entries from a shuffled caller sheet and players mark them; the first complete line (row, column or diagonal) wins.

How to host French Colors bingo

  1. Print the French Colors cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with bleu, vert, bordeaux, kaki and la neige blanche.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 40 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with brun, le citron jaune, rose, l'ours brun and kaki; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. When “la grenouille verte” comes up, ask players to say it with a masculine noun, such as “le crayon vert”, and listen for the silent final t.

  4. Point out that “orange” and “marron” never change, so “la carotte orange” keeps the same ending, while “blanc” becomes “blanche”.

  5. Call “bleu marine” and “bleu foncé” back to back and ask which one is the color of a sailor's uniform.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 12 (gris in this set's order) and a blackout near call 36; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

French Colors bingo variations

  • French Colors variation

Agreement bingo: the caller says only a noun with its article, like “la mer”, and players mark any phrase whose color agrees with that noun's gender, then say the color in the right form.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, bleu to gris; on average one card fills after 39.4 of the 40 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Picture bingo for pre-readers

Use 3x3 cards with the 12 entries that have a symbol, such as la pomme rouge, la grenouille verte and le citron jaune.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the French Colors bingo list?

40, from argenté to violet. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 16. The shortest entry is bleu (4 characters) and the longest is la grenouille verte (19).

Are all French Colors bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 13 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 3.90 × 10³⁴ different arrangements are possible from the 40 entries (62,852,101,650 different selections of 24).

How many French Colors bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 12 calls with 30 cards in play, 10 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 14 with just 10. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does French Colors bingo take?

A French Colors game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 12 calls (8-15 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 36; with 10 players the first line needs about 14.

Can I print French Colors bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 40 entries; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own French Colors bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 40 entries are already in the generator, so delete jaune or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.

Is there a picture version of French Colors bingo?

12 of the 40 entries have a picture symbol (🍎 la pomme rouge, 🐸 la grenouille verte, 🍋 le citron jaune, 🥕 la carotte orange). Print 3x3 cards with symbol entries such as le cochon rose and le chat noir for children who cannot read yet; symbols show on screen and in browser printing.
