About Nativity bingo

A Nativity card that follows the Christmas story as told in the Gospel of Luke and the Gospel of Matthew: Mary and Joseph's Long journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the Census, No room at the inn, the Shepherds and the Heavenly host, and the Magi with Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. School-play squares such as the Tea towel headdress make it fun after a nativity performance.

On a 5x5 card with a free center, Nativity bingo shows 24 of the 44 entries, so each one lands on about 55% of the cards: in a set of 30, Bethlehem or Nazareth appears on roughly 16 cards. Card 1 leaves out 20 of them, including Baby Jesus, Angel Gabriel and Donkey, so no single card can mark everything.

The caller reads the 44 entries from a shuffled caller sheet and players mark them; the first complete line (row, column or diagonal) wins.

When to play Nativity bingo

Christmas 2026 falls on Friday, December 25. At home or at a party, play on Friday, December 25 itself. For a classroom round, schools close from December 24, so the last Friday before the break, December 18, is the usual slot.

In 2027 it falls on Saturday, December 25. Printing 30 cards at one card per page takes 30 sheets plus the caller sheet, so print a few days ahead and keep the share link (seed "nativity") to reprint the same set.

How long Nativity bingo lasts

Simulated over 150 shuffled games on cards 1-60 of this set: the median first line arrives on call 13 with 30 players and on call 16 with 10, while a blackout takes 40 calls, roughly 7 minutes at 10 seconds a call.

How to host Nativity bingo

  1. Print the Nativity cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Narrator, Flock by night, Innkeeper, Myrrh and Tinsel halo.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 44 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Innkeeper, King Herod, Shepherd's crook, Swaddling clothes and Peace on Earth; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Read the story aloud in short sections and call each square as it appears; the Magi and King Herod come last, so the game builds to the end.

  4. After a nativity play, let cast members call the squares for their own roles, such as the Innkeeper or the Narrator.

  5. Ask children which gift the Wise men brought when Myrrh or Frankincense is called; short explanations help new words stick.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 13 (Frankincense in this set's order) and a blackout near call 40; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Nativity bingo variations

  • Nativity variation

Story order bingo: players must mark squares in the order they happen in the story. A square called too early stays open until its place, so listeners learn the sequence from Census to Star of Bethlehem.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Narrator to Lantern light; on average one card fills after 43.2 of the 44 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 44 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 42.4 calls instead of 43.2.

First 15 calls of this Nativity set

Seed "nativity" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 11 of the first 30 completes the I column (Camels, Wooden crib, Tinsel halo, Innkeeper and Swaddling clothes) on call 15, and card 2 is the first full card on call 40.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Nativity bingo list?

44, from Angel Gabriel to Wooden crib. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 20. The shortest entry is Ox (2 characters) and the longest is Tea towel headdress (19).

Are all Nativity bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 16 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 1.09 × 10³⁶ different arrangements are possible from the 44 entries (1,761,039,350,070 different selections of 24).

How many Nativity bingo cards per person?

Usually one. Extra cards speed the game up only a little: on this list a first line took a median 13 calls with 30 cards in play, 10 with 60 (30 players on two cards each) and 16 with just 10. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does Nativity bingo take?

A Nativity game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 13 calls (9-16 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 40; with 10 players the first line needs about 16.

Can I print Nativity bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 44 entries; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own Nativity bingo cards?

Start from this list: the 44 entries are already in the generator, so delete Innkeeper or any other entry, type your own one per line and the cards update as you type. Keep at least 24 entries for 5x5 cards (16 for 4x4); the share link reprints exactly the same set.
