About Hanukkah bingo

A Hanukkah card for the eight-night Festival of Lights, which begins on 25 Kislev in the Hebrew calendar. It covers the Hanukkiah and its Shamash helper candle, the four dreidel letters Nun, Gimel, Hei and Shin, foods fried in Olive oil such as Latkes and Sufganiyot, and the story of Judah Maccabee, the Rededication of the Temple and the Miracle of the oil.

On a 5x5 card with a free center, Hanukkah bingo shows 24 of the 46 entries, so each one lands on about 52% of the cards: in a set of 30, Menorah or Hanukkiah appears on roughly 16 cards. Card 1 leaves out 22 of them, including Menorah, Hanukkiah and Shamash, so no single card can mark everything.

A host reads out one entry at a time from the printed caller sheet (all 46 of them, shuffled); players daub the square if their card has it and call bingo on a full line.

How to host Hanukkah bingo

  1. Print the Hanukkah cards

Give each player one card; a free set prints up to 30, no two alike. Card 1 above starts with Sundown, Latkes, 25 Kislev, Tzedakah and Sufganiyot.

  2. Print the caller sheet

All 46 entries appear on it in shuffled order, opening with Sour cream, Family gathering, Jelly doughnuts, Maoz Tzur and Cheese pancakes; tick each one as you read it out.

  3. Play one short round on each of the Eight nights after Lighting candles, keeping the same cards so the game finishes on the last night.

  4. Teach the dreidel as you go: when Nun, Gimel, Hei or Shin is called, explain that the four letters stand for "a great miracle happened there".

  5. Use Gelt or Chocolate coins as bingo markers; children can eat their markers once the round is over.

  6. Call until someone shouts bingo

With 30 cards, expect the first line near call 14 (Applesauce in this set's order) and a blackout near call 42; check the winner's squares against your ticked list.

Hanukkah bingo variations

  • Hanukkah variation

Dreidel bingo: instead of reading calls, spin a dreidel. Nun means skip, Gimel lets the player mark any square, Hei marks a food square and Shin lets the next player choose.

  • Blackout round

Card 1 needs all 24 squares, Sundown to Gifts each night; on average one card fills after 45.1 of the 46 calls (98% of the deck).

  • Quick 4x4 round

A 4x4 card needs 16 of the 46 entries and no free space; one card is full after about 44.2 calls instead of 45.1.

First 15 calls of this Hanukkah set

Seed "hanukkah" gives this order, the same one the caller sheet prints. With these calls, card 5 of the first 30 completes the N column (Maoz Tzur, Family gathering, Cheese pancakes and Kislev) on call 9, and card 1 is the first full card on call 44.

Frequently asked questions

How many words are on the Hanukkah bingo list?

46, from 25 Kislev to Window display. A 5x5 card with a free center uses 24 of them, so each card leaves out 22. The shortest entry is Hei (3 characters) and the longest is Songs after lighting (20).

Are all Hanukkah bingo cards the same?

No. Card 1 and card 2 of this set share 14 of their 24 squares, and every card is checked so none of the 30 in a free set repeats. About 4.90 Γ— 10³⁢ different arrangements are possible from the 46 entries (7,890,371,113,950 different selections of 24).

How many Hanukkah bingo cards per person?

One card each is standard. In 150 simulated games of this list, 30 players on one card each got a first line after a median 14 calls; with two cards each (60 in play) it came after 12, and 10 single cards took 17. Two cards suit adults who want a faster game; young children do best with one. A free set of 30 covers 15 players on two cards each.

How long does Hanukkah bingo take?

A Hanukkah game with 30 players usually reaches its first line after 14 calls (9-17 in 80% of simulated games), about 2 minutes at one call every 10 seconds. A blackout takes about 42; with 10 players the first line needs about 17.

Can I print Hanukkah bingo cards for free?

Yes. The generator above makes up to 30 cards (5x5 cards with a free center) from the 46 entries; Print cards sends them to your printer and Download PDF saves one card per page, so 30 cards take 30 pages plus the caller sheet. It all runs in your browser with no sign-up.

How do I make my own Hanukkah bingo cards?

Open Edit words in the generator above: it already holds the 46 entries, one per line. Replace Kislev with something from your own group, add inside jokes or names, and the sample card redraws at once. 5x5 cards need 24 entries or more.
